If you just cleared your Class 12 exams and are figuring out how to get into a good college in Assam, there is one portal you absolutely need to know about β SAMARTH. The Government of Assam has brought the entire college admission process online through this single centralized platform, and for the academic session 2026β2027, it is the primary gateway for undergraduate and integrated master's admissions across the state. No more physically visiting multiple colleges, no more separate forms, no more confusion. Everything happens here. NE Career Hub has all the details you need to apply without missing a step.
SAMARTH stands for the Assam State Higher Education Admission Portal. It was launched on 14th June 2023 as part of the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT), a Ministry of Education initiative to bring higher education services fully online across India. For Assam specifically, DHE β the Directorate of Higher Education β adopted it as the official platform for all college admissions under the state's higher education system.
The idea is simple: instead of a student running around to five different colleges with five different forms and five different application fees, they register once on SAMARTH, fill in their details, and apply to up to 10 colleges in a single application. Shortlisting and selection happen entirely on merit, transparently, through the portal itself. For students from smaller towns and rural areas across Northeast India, this is a genuine game-changer. Keep track of all such important updates on NE Career Hub.
Through the SAMARTH portal, you can seek admission into two types of programmes offered by participating colleges and universities across Assam:
Both programmes are available across a wide network of government, provincialised, and autonomous colleges, as well as state universities throughout Assam.
Beyond the obvious convenience of a single online application, the SAMARTH portal comes with some real practical advantages worth knowing about.
First, the merit-based selection means the process is transparent β your Class 12 marks do the talking, not which college you visited first or whether you knew someone. Second, you can add up to 10 college and programme preferences in one go, which significantly improves your chances of getting into a college that suits you. Third, the Government of Assam's tuition fee waiver scheme for economically weaker students is only accessible through SAMARTH β so if you are eligible for that benefit, applying through this portal is mandatory to claim it. If you want to stay on top of admission deadlines and education news from across Northeast India, NE Career Hub is worth bookmarking.
The admission process is divided into two tracks β one for students applying without CUET scores, and one for those with CUET scores. Both tracks opened registration on the same date.
Non-CUET Track: Registration began on 11th April 2026. Programme selection, merit list publication, and class commencement dates are yet to be officially announced and will be updated on the SAMARTH portal.
CUET Track: Registration also began on 11th April 2026. Merit list publication, admission rounds, and spot admission dates are pending official confirmation.
It is strongly advised to keep checking the official portal regularly so you do not miss any deadline once dates are announced. You can also follow NE Career Hub for timely updates on the Assam college admission schedule.
The application process is entirely online and should not take more than 30β45 minutes if you have all your documents ready in advance. Here is how it works:
One important note: registration begins from 4 PM on 11th April 2026, not from midnight. The college and programme selection phase opens after Class 12 results are declared.
Before you sit down to fill out the application, make sure you have scanned copies of all the following documents ready to upload:
Having these scanned and saved before you start the form will save you a lot of time and prevent the frustration of stopping midway to arrange documents.
Before you can complete your SAMARTH admission, you also need to have a DHE Assam Student Unique ID. This is a separate but mandatory step β every student applying to colleges under DHE Assam must have this ID generated from the official DHE portal at directorateofhighereducation.assam.gov.in. If you already generated one in a previous session, that same ID remains valid. If you haven't done it yet, take care of it alongside your SAMARTH registration. You can read the full guide on how to generate and correct your DHE Unique ID on NE Career Hub.
The portal covers a wide range of institutions across Assam. Major universities listed include Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam University, Cotton University, Bodoland University, Assam Women's University, Majuli University of Culture, Jagannath Barooah University, Sibsagar University, and North Lakhimpur University, among others. Prominent autonomous colleges on the list include Arya Vidyapeeth College, B. Borooah College, Nowgong College, Tinsukia College, DHSK College, and Digboi College, along with dozens of other autonomous and affiliated institutions spread across the state. In total, the portal covers 36+ major colleges and universities, with more institutions expected to participate.
